Franklinton Underground Cinema will be sponsoring the 3rd annual Lenten Film Series, to be hosted for the first time by St. John’s Episcopal Church. Seven films will be featured weekly, beginning Sunday, February 19th through Palm Sunday, April 1st. These particular films will explore themes of grief, sacrifice, freedom, love, and hope (and that’s just the first film!), but overall the intention is to help us to reflect on the brokenness in the world, and to help us engage in the spiritual discipline of lament. To quote Emmanuel Katongole from Duke Divinity School, “The discipline of lament not only allows us to see the depth of the world’s brokenness (including our own and the church’s complicity in it); it also shapes reconciliation as a journey that involves truth, conversion, and forgiveness.” With that in mind, we have sought films from all over the world, from Japan, Europe, and Hollywood, dating back to 1921 up to 2011. Jump to the list of films @ our page on Mubi.com
The doors will open at 8:00pm for a time of coffee, tea, and chatter. At 8:30pm, we will read liturgy, poetry, scripture, etc., likely pertaining to the theme of the particular film.
I believe that the women, below, singing a beautiful Psalm, give off a very lenten film series vibe. Fear not the tunnel.
