The Weight of Prostitution

...

Recently, we have been subjected to prostitution on our own street corner. It is as devastating, as you could imagine, i guess. It is hard to look at that kind of powerlessness - even harder to look her in the eyes.

On top of that, the last three films I have seen have centered around a kind or class of prostitution.

And today, as I was leaving work, at a stop sign, i neglected to make eye contact with a prostitute - which is traditionally a sign that i am not interested - but she proceeded to try to get my attention anyway - asking me if i wanted a ride - to which i shook my head negatively - and then drove home.

it is interesting, because by now, it should be obvious who I am in the neighborhood - what role i play or whatever - but these women are trafficked in and out so often - they don't know who is who. Everyman is a potential customer.

anyways, as i see it, prostitution, unlike abortion, is not a modern problem - it is an age-old problem - noting the historical significance of the relational holocaust. modernity has taken it to another level, for sure, but it has always been around (according to the movies anyways :).

vivre sa vie

A film about a prostitute martyred for a need of shelter and a belief that love is the only truth.

faces

A film about a modern marriage, failed - and a prostitute who provides comfort in a time of need - despite not being seen as a human.

The Girlfriend Experience

A film about an "escort" who has principles, who is looking for real love, who then gets fucked by both.
